Liars Tickets Now On Sale

Tickets for Liars' Modulations show at Carriageworks on Friday June 6 are now available here (the band also play the Corner Hotel in Melbourne on Thursday June 5). Always pushing the envelope with concept albums, innovative campaigns, visual art and collaboration, the LA 3-piece fit in perfectly with Modulations' exploration of how music performance, art, installation and contemporary ideas intersect, overlap and influence. Let's take a sample of some of the group's art practices and pairings over their 15 year career.

Art direction for their latest album Mess has found them incorporating multi-coloured string in different configurations. From inventive Instagram posts to shrink-wrapping balls into limited edition LPs, DIY video clips and well orchestrated press shots, this creative noodling penetrates the album's vision.

Liars have proven to be fashion proof since the their deranged dance punk debut They Threw Us All in a Trench and Stuck a Monument on Top in 2001. This moment in time was revisited after Hedi Slimane requested to use the heart pumping Mr Your On Fire Mr for Saint Laurent's Paris Fashion Week SS14 show. Angus Andrew remixed it into 18 minutes of reckless pogoing and ghostly suspense.

On their 2011 album WIXIW (pronounced "wish you"), the band recruited Alex/2Tone to direct the title track. A superbly shot ambiguous narrative of the Greek myth of Sisyphus as told by a young ballplayer lost in a haze of codeine and prescription weed. Alex/2Tone has also directed clips for Iggy Azalea, Danny Brown, Kid Sister and Far East Movement.

It's painful being subjected to mediocre press shots every day. Token imagery that reveals nothing about the artist. Liars hear our plight and consistently venture to keep things interesting. Exhibit A + B from photographer Zen Sekizawa.

The band's catalogue is littered with carefully considered concept or 'story' albums. Their ethereal third journey Drum's Not Dead introduced us to two fictional characters that are key to Liar's process - Drum and Mount Heart Attack, the former being the instinctive and assertive spirit of creative confidence, and the latter, pessimistic and apprehensive. This emotional wrestle spawned an incredible album, the peak being the final procession The Other Side of Mt. Heart Attack.
