This isn't the first time we've confessed our love for Hamilton, Ontario native Jessy Lanza. We've worked her sparkling debut Pull My Hair Back to the bone since it's release last year - the album being a compelling partnership of Jessy's subtle but seeping r'n'b hooks and the pitched down electronics of co-producer, Junior Boy and Roland Tings remixer Jeremy Greenspan.
The good tastes of Cut Copy have recruited her as main support for their current North American tour dates (posted below with our interview and playlist) which kicked off yesterday. We're imaging this cruisy mixtape is her pre-show warm up.
Tell me about Hamilton. What does it have that other cities are missing?
I think because Hamilton is a smaller city without the cultural reputation of cities like Toronto or Montreal the people who live here and make art don't do it for any reason other than the fact that they're compelled to, so even though the art and music scene is small it always feels sincere to me .
Is there much of a creative community there? Anyone we should be looking out for?
Yeah there is a creative community - there's Group of 7 Billion and Sean Gadoury who make really amazing collage stuff, Becky Katz and Christie Sealey are incredible artists, Witches and Young Rival are great bands from Hamilton and also this art collective called HAVN that do really awesome art/music multimedia stuff.
When did you discover your voice?
I don't think thats happened yet.
What was Jeremy Greenspan's role as co-producer? How did the collaborative process work?
We get together and show each other ideas or beginnings of a track and go from there - sometimes we work together but more often we pass a track back and forth until it's ready to be mixed
I read that the Pull My Hair Back cover is a reference to Sean Young's character Rachael in Blade Runner. Did any other film or literature inform the album?
In a way yeah because I do watch a lot of science fiction movies and they often have really great sounds that I end up sampling.
How did the record fall into the hands of Hyperdub's Kode9?
Jeremy Greenspan and Kode9 have known each other a long time - they ran into each other last year and Jer played him a few tracks we had been working on - after that he said he was interested in releasing an LP so we finished the album.
Touring seems to be taking up a lot of your schedule. Have you been writing new music? In what ways do you expect your sound will evolve moving forward?
I have been working on new stuff and have added a couple synths to my studio and Jer just got a bunch of new modular stuff so gear will definitely impact the new album.
How would you spend a day with 0 responsibilities?
I just wanna watch the Simpsons
