Modcast #170: Ducktails

Calling Matthew Mondanile to the stand - the member of New Jersey guitar pop band Real Estate who also operates solo as Ducktails. Matt is one of Kevin Parker's chosen few having been green lit to dub out hip hop drums on his Mind Mischief remix. Following his latest EP of earnest folkie pop and chillwave Wish Hotel (out now on Domino), he digs through his record collection to deliver this super cool mix. We also speak about life in LA and jumping from 30 ft poles below (including Australian tour dates with Julia Holter!).

You've just come off a very busy year touring Ducktails and are heading into what we can only imagine will be a crazier one with Real Estate. How do you stay sane?

I'm not sure. I don't mind touring. It is getting a little difficult but I somehow feel like it will all work out alright. I stay sane by working all the time i guess!

You're from Ridgewood, NJ. It's produced a lot of bands for a small town right?

It does produce a lot of bands. I think it's cool. Most of the people I meet they are like, "how are you in a band with your friends from high school still?" and I guess I don't know why but I can relate to my high school friends pretty well sometimes. It's cool.

Why the recent move to LA?

I was looking for a change and it just worked out that I got to live in nice house with some friends out here. I'm really into it!

Rick Milovanovic from the Twerps sent in this spectacular photograph of you. Is there a story behind it?

IMG_6051

Oh yeah! That photo is from when Jackson from Real Estate and I were in Melbourne, Australia. Rick drove us out to this beach where there was this like 20-30 feet tall pole in the water and we climbed up to it. It was really windy and shaking and we were both scared to jump off but we both did cause Rick encouraged us. What a good mate!

Have you been impressed by any art of late?

Hmm, I'm not super impressed with recent stuff but I like contemporary art a lot. I am a fan of Martin Kippenberger's work.

What about film?

I really like Bill Murray, Diane Keaton, Woody Allen.

Does this mixtape come with directions? How should listeners set up the optimum listening environment?

This is a cool mix to listen to while cleaning your room or house or whatever, in the car or on headphones. Thanks everyone!
