Prof. Ross Harley presents Philip Brophy's "Club Video"
Signal to Noise Session 3: Experimental Film and Video will feature the celluloid side of the Post Punk era. While musicians were tinkering with circuits and sine-waves circa 1979 a group of fledgling film makers pushed the boundaries of Super 8 film and tape.
One of the panelists for this session is Professor Ross Harley, who first appeared on the scene making music videos for power pop bands such as The Riptides. From a musical beginning he then went on to produce a number of award winning experimental films and write for publications including Rolling Stone, Sydney Morning Herald, Cinema Papers and The Australia. Currently he is the Head of the School of Media Arts, College of Fine Arts at the University of New South Wales.
For his presentation at the Signal to Noise Sessions, Ross Harley will be presenting Philip Brophy's 1985 work "Club Video" a two screen video that runs for 20 minutes, which has only ever been shown twice since its creation.
For those without their finger on the pulse of the experimental film scene, Philip Brophy has become one of the most influential experimental film makers of our time after first performing as part of the underground Melbourne band -> ^ -> (pronounced tsk tsk tsk).
The Signal To Noise Sessions will be a day of free talks exploring early experimentation in music, film and video and the cultural influences surrounding one of the most creative periods in Australia's music history on January 16 at the Seymour Centre and is completely free.
